One of the most powerful mindset shifts I’ve ever learned is this:

✨ Stop “shoulding” all over yourself.

How often do you find yourself thinking:

“I should have said something.”

“I should have handled that differently.”

“I should be doing more.”

“I should be further along by now.”

The word should often sounds harmless, but it frequently carries judgment, shame, and self-criticism with it.

When we focus on what we should have done, we spend our energy arguing with reality.

What happened has already happened.

What if instead, you replaced “should have” with “could have”?

💭 I could have stayed up late finishing that extra project, but I chose to rest.

💭 I could have said yes, but I chose to honor my boundaries.

💭 I could have rescued someone from the consequences of their choices, but I chose to let them learn and grow.

Notice the difference?

“Should” implies there was one right answer.

“Could” acknowledges that you had options and made a choice.

And when you recognize your choices, you reclaim your agency.

This isn’t about avoiding responsibility. It’s about moving from self-judgment to self-awareness.

The next time you catch yourself saying “I should have…” pause and ask:

✨ What was I trying to honor with the choice I made?

You may discover there’s a lot more wisdom in your decisions than you’ve been giving yourself credit for.
