So many of us move through life carrying around a constant stream of “shoulds.”
I should have done more.
I should have handled that differently.
I should be further along by now.
But “should” often creates shame, guilt, and self-judgment instead of growth. 🧠
One simple mindset shift that can feel incredibly freeing is changing your “should haves” into “could haves.”
Because “could have” acknowledges that you had options.
It creates space for intentional choice instead of self-punishment. ✨
💜 “I could have stayed up all night overworking, but I chose to honor my limits.”
💜 “I could have rescued everyone around me, but I chose boundaries.”
💜 “I could have taken my child’s forgotten lunch to school, but I chose to allow them to learn responsibility.”
Do you notice how different that feels?
One creates shame.
The other creates awareness, ownership, and self-respect.
Sometimes we resist this shift because if we stop judging ourselves, we worry we’ll stop growing. But self-compassion and accountability can exist together.
You can take responsibility for your life without constantly emotionally punishing yourself in the process. 🦋 https://thoughtworkmd.com/chat/
