So many people make losing weight be their New Year’s Resolution.
I hate resolutions. They are a set up for failure.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just maintain a steady state for how we wanted to show up each day instead?
In order to lose weight and keep it off, you have to understand what is contributing to being overweight in the first place.
Is it due to your hormones? Lack of exercise? Or overeating?
Let’s talk about overeating.
There are 2 reasons why we are triggered to eat- Hunger and Desire
HUNGER is a sensation that you first feel in your body (like your tummy rumbling). That sensation sends a signal up to your brain, alerting you to your hunger. This tells you to go eat.
DESIRE is an emotion that starts in our minds that travels to our mouth. So you think about how much you want that cupcake and then your mouth starts watering and the next thing you know you’ve eaten 4 of them.
So the first step is to start becoming aware if you are eating because of hunger or because of desire.
Hunger is subtle and it usually comes on gradually. Obviously, if we ignore it, it becomes much more intense, but it mostly starts out like a slow alert or nag.
Desire (and the failure to satisfy a desire) are much more URGENT and intense. You feel like you are going to die if you don’t answer to the desire and can’t stop thinking about it.
So again- the first step in learning about how to lose weight is becoming more aware about what is triggering you to eat.
Are your actions being driven by true hunger, or are you giving your power away to desire?
