We’ve been taught that putting ourselves first is selfish.
So we become really good at putting everyone else first.
Our families.
Our careers.
Our responsibilities.
The people who need us.
And somewhere along the way, we start believing that taking care of ourselves is something we have to earn.
But what if I told you that sometimes, being a little “selfish” is actually one of the most generous things you can do? 💜
Because self-care isn’t about ignoring everyone else.
It’s about making sure you’re not running on empty while trying to take care of everyone around you.
Think about the oxygen mask on an airplane.
You’re instructed to put yours on first—not because you don’t care about the person next to you, but because you can’t effectively help someone else if you can’t breathe.
The same is true in life.
You can’t consistently do your best work, be present in your relationships, care for your family, or contribute in the ways that matter to you when you’re completely depleted.
Taking care of yourself gives you more capacity to give.
So maybe the goal isn’t to choose between selfishness and self-sacrifice.
Maybe it’s learning to recognize that your needs matter, too.
Rest when you need rest.
Set the boundary.
Say no.
Make time for yourself without guilt.
Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s essential. 🦋
And you don’t need permission to take care of yourself.
