Most of us think of adversity as something we’re forced to deal with. Something undesirable. Something we couldn’t avoid.

But what if we chose it?

What if you intentionally took on challenges just to see what you were capable of? To grow in ways you never imagined? To stretch your limits… just because you could? Even if you didn’t succeed the very first time? 🤩

Optional adversity—choosing to take on challenges you don’t have to face—is where real growth happens. It expands your resilience, creativity, and confidence. It pushes you out of your comfort zone and accelerates your journey toward your goals.

Yes, it can feel uncomfortable. Yes, it can be stressful. But leaning into it intentionally? That’s how you discover your potential.

It took my boy 10 years of learning, researching, and trying, time after time, to catch that darn shark. Finally, his perseverance paid off. Look at the smile on his face as he releases his BIG catch (it swam off, don’t fret)! 🦈 😬

And speaking of challenges we choose to face every day—I want to take a moment to honor my fellow pediatricians on National Pediatricians Day. 💛 Every day, we meet challenges head-on, care for little humans, and show up even when it’s hard. I see you. I appreciate you.

So I ask you—are you avoiding discomfort, or are you ready to embrace optional adversity and see what you’re really capable of?
